Record and confirm the buyer decision path

Leave discovery with corrected buyer roles, observable decision criteria, and one confirmed next step or pause.

Before you start

Get what you need before you start

  • Write the buyer problem and the evidence that currently supports it.
  • Prepare to close or pause the opportunity when the decision path is absent.

Steps

Work through the method

Use the listed inputs and tools. Check the evidence when you need to verify a step.

  1. Prepare the decision questions

Draft questions about the prospect jobs, current workaround, consequence, decision criteria, required roles, timing, and evidence. Mark assumptions clearly.

Why it matters: A prepared profile keeps the conversation centred on the buyer decision.

    Input
Existing discovery notes, sourced account context, and the product limits.
    Output
A short question guide and provisional decision map.

  2. Separate facts from open questions

After the conversation, record buyer statements, role map, criteria, blockers, and unresolved questions. Do not infer authority or urgency.

Why it matters: A reviewable map prevents polite interest from becoming an unsupported stage claim.

    Input
The meeting notes and provisional decision map.
    Output
A fact-labelled decision record with unknowns.

  3. Confirm one buyer-owned next step

Send the concise record to the buyer and ask them to correct it. Record the agreed owner and date, or mark the opportunity paused or closed.

Why it matters: The buyer response supplies the observable evidence for the next state.

    Input
The fact-labelled record and proposed next step.
    Output
A corrected decision path and an explicit advance, pause, or close state.

Success checks

Check the result before you finish

  • Buyer statements and founder assumptions are visibly separate.
  • The relevant buyer has corrected or confirmed the next step.
  • The pipeline state follows observable evidence.

Failure modes

Watch for these problems

  • A vague “follow up” remains. Name the decision, owner, and date.
  • The founder assigns a buyer role without confirmation. Mark it Unknown.
  • General interest moves the stage. Keep the current state until an observable step occurs.
