Marketing Practice

Run a bounded landing-page message variation

Change one supported message element, preserve the comparison, and record what the observed response can and cannot show.

Preparation
One setup session, the planned test window, and one review.
Difficulty
Moderate
Task
Revise a landing-page message
Back to the Task: Revise a landing-page message

Before you start

Get what you need before you start

  • Identify the page, audience, meaningful action, traffic source, and message problem you want to examine.
  • Keep the current page version and verify the product facts behind the proposed message.
  • Use Google Ads only when an eligible responsive search advert variation fits the traffic path.
  • Complete the applicable tracking, consent, privacy, and claim review before launch.

Steps

Work through the method

Use the listed inputs and tools. Check the evidence when you need to verify a step.

  1. Write one message hypothesis

State the named audience, current wording, proposed wording, expected page action, reason, and plausible competing explanations. Change one headline, description, promotion, or URL.

Why it matters: A single stated change makes the later observation easier to interpret without claiming that the page validates the product.

    Input
The current page, audience evidence, product facts, traffic source, and page-action definition.
    Output
A dated hypothesis with one changed element, expected signal, claim evidence, and competing explanations.

  2. Check claims and tracking

Review express and implied claims. Confirm the event, tagging, consent route, privacy information, date range, and traffic exclusions before configuring the variation.

Why it matters: A message test is unusable when the claim lacks support or the response measure is collected incorrectly.

    Input
The hypothesis, product substantiation, analytics design, target markets, and review policy.
    Output
A signed launch checklist with supported wording, event definition, data boundary, and reviewer.

  3. Configure the supported variation

If eligible, configure the one responsive search advert change, dates, split, and final URLs in Google Ads. Save screenshots or an export of the exact settings. Use another reviewed implementation route when this Google Ads capability does not fit.

Why it matters: The Tool supports only specific advert variations. It does not provide a general landing-page experiment method.

    Input
The approved hypothesis, eligible campaign, spend limit, dates, allocation, and final URLs.
    Output
A configured variation and retained setup record, or a documented decision that the Tool does not fit.

  4. Interpret the response cautiously

At the planned review date, record exposure, the chosen action, data gaps, operational changes, and other explanations. Decide to retain, revise, or stop the message without claiming product validation.

Why it matters: A response difference can reflect traffic, delivery, season, measurement, offer, or chance as well as the wording.

    Input
The setup record, platform results, page analytics, incident record, and original hypothesis.
    Output
A decision record with observations, limits, competing explanations, and the next bounded action.

Success checks

Check the result before you finish

  • The test changes one message element and preserves the previous version.
  • The action, date range, allocation, spend limit, and exclusions were set before launch.
  • Every public claim has recorded support and the required review.
  • The decision lists alternative explanations and avoids product-demand claims.

Failure modes

Watch for these problems

  • Several page elements change together. Reduce the test to one message hypothesis.
  • Traffic does not belong to the named audience. Record the mismatch and do not interpret the result as message evidence.
  • The Tool is ineligible or cannot vary the needed element. Record the gap and use a reviewed implementation route.
  • The team treats sign-ups as proof of purchase intent. Rewrite the conclusion around the observed page action only.
