Build a shortlist for one target buyer profile
Produce a small account list with sourced fit evidence, a problem hypothesis, and a next action for each account.
- Preparation
- One focused research block and one human review.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Task
- Build an account shortlist
Before you start
Get what you need before you start
- Choose one customer profile and write the sales question the shortlist must answer.
- Confirm which company and contact data sources you may use.
Steps
Work through the method
Use the listed inputs and tools. Check the evidence when you need to verify a step.
Define fit and disqualifying evidence
Write a prospect profile and a short set of observable fit, exclusion, and problem-signal fields. Leave every threshold provisional.
Why it matters: Explicit fields expose the assumptions behind the shortlist.
- Input
- One chosen customer profile, interview learning, and the current sales question.
- Output
- A review sheet with definitions, sources, and provisional criteria.

Research one account at a time
Record cited company evidence, the contact-data source, a problem hypothesis, contrary evidence, and Unknown where the source is silent.
Why it matters: A short cited record lets a reviewer separate observed fit from interpretation.
- Input
- The review sheet and permitted public or licensed sources.
- Output
- Account rows with citations, hypotheses, gaps, and no unsourced personal details.

Review and choose the next action
Apply the provisional criteria, inspect every included account, and assign a conversation, more research, or exclude action. Complete the outreach check before contact.
Why it matters: A score can organise review but cannot prove demand.
- Input
- The researched account rows and applicable outreach requirements.
- Output
- A checked shortlist with one next action and owner per account.

Success checks
Check the result before you finish
- Every included account fits the chosen profile through cited evidence.
- Every problem signal is labelled as a hypothesis until a buyer confirms it.
- Every contact record states its source and next action.
Failure modes
Watch for these problems
- The score hides weak evidence. Read each cited source before inclusion.
- The list mixes customer profiles. Remove rows outside the chosen profile.
- Public contact data is treated as unrestricted. Complete the applicable privacy and outreach checks.
