Review a stalled deal and choose its state
Separate deal facts from guesses, test one relevant next step, and record advance, pause, or close.
- Preparation
- One internal review and one buyer-facing confirmation attempt.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Task
- Diagnose a stalled deal
Before you start
Get what you need before you start
- Gather the meeting record, promised next step, stakeholder notes, and follow-up history.
- Check the permitted contact route for each person.
Steps
Work through the method
Use the listed inputs and tools. Check the evidence when you need to verify a step.
Reconstruct the observable facts
Record the buyer problem, statements, attendees, missing roles, promised actions, dates, responses, and silence. Put every cause of the stall in a separate hypothesis column.
Why it matters: The review must not turn silence into a diagnosis.
- Input
- The deal activity record and meeting notes.
- Output
- A fact table with separate hypotheses and missing evidence.

Rebuild the stakeholder and decision map
List the user, champion, economic buyer, technical, security, procurement, legal, and finance roles that may matter. Ask the champion to correct the map before broader contact.
Why it matters: One contact may not hold the information or authority needed for the next decision.
- Input
- The fact table and known buyer context.
- Output
- A provisional stakeholder map and one question for each missing role.

Test one next step and decide
Send a concise factual recap and one decision question through a permitted route. Record a buyer-confirmed advance, a dated pause, or a close reason.
Why it matters: An explicit state protects attention while preserving a respectful route back.
- Input
- The fact table, corrected role map, and applicable outreach checks.
- Output
- An evidence-linked advance, pause, or close state.

Success checks
Check the result before you finish
- Facts and stall hypotheses are separate.
- The relevant buyer role has corrected the next step where reachable.
- The deal state follows observable evidence and includes a review date where paused.
Failure modes
Watch for these problems
- Silence becomes a reason. Label the cause Unknown.
- The founder contacts new roles without context. Ask the champion and complete outreach checks first.
- The pipeline stays open without a decision. Set a pause review date or close it.
